Suffering Is Optional… But Pain Is Not
That might sound confronting, especially in a world where so much is happening all at once. But this is a truth I’ve been deeply integrating lately.
After moving through intense periods of reflection, growth, and emotional processing, I felt called to come back and share this. Not from a place of having it all figured out, but from a place of awareness.
Because the truth is, doing meaningful work, sharing your voice, and being of service in the world is not always easy.
And yet, here I am.
We Are All Suffering, Just in Different Ways
For a long time, I believed suffering was tied to circumstance.
That suffering belonged to people who:
Didn’t have money
Didn’t have support
Didn’t have “good” life outcomes
But through my work with women from all walks of life, different ages, and different levels of wealth, I’ve realized something important:
We are all suffering. Just differently.
At the same time, we cannot ignore that there are systems that impact people differently. There are power structures, historical inequalities, and social dynamics that shape our experiences.
Multiple truths can exist at once.
And within that, there is still something we all have access to:
The power to choose how we respond.
Pain Is Inevitable. Suffering Is a Choice
Life happens to all of us.
Pain is part of the human experience:
Heartbreak
Grief
Loss
Disappointment
Our bodies are vulnerable. Our lives are unpredictable.
Pain is inevitable.
But suffering?
Suffering is the meaning we attach to that pain.
It is the story we tell ourselves about what happened, what it means, and who we are because of it.
The Stories You Tell Yourself Shape Your Reality
One of the biggest shifts in my life came when I realized:
The stories I tell myself about my life shape how I experience my life.
I used to believe that my perspective was reality.
But now I see it differently.
I may not be able to control what happens to me…
But I can control how I interpret it.
I can create:
A story that disempowers me
Or a story that empowers me
And that choice influences everything:
How I feel
How I show up
What I create
There Is Nothing Wrong With You
So many of us are walking through life believing there is something wrong with us.
I know I did.
Growing up in an immigrant household, absorbing cultural narratives, watching stories about what life “should” look like… I internalized a lot of expectations.
And when my life didn’t match those expectations, I thought I was the problem.
But what I’ve come to understand is this:
There is nothing wrong with you.
You are not broken.
You are not behind.
You are not failing.
You are navigating a human experience, in a very broken system that thrives on keeping you disconnected from yourself.
You Can’t Hate Yourself Into Growth
This is one of the most important lessons I’ve learned:
You cannot hate yourself into becoming better.
Shame does not create transformation.
In fact, it often keeps you stuck in the very patterns you’re trying to escape.
Real growth comes from:
Awareness
Context
Compassion
Acceptance
You can only love yourself into change.
Why We Feel “Not Enough” (Even When We Have So Much)
Living between cultures has given me a unique perspective.
In places like Colombia, I’ve seen people create joy, connection, and presence with very little.
In North America, I see something different.
We have more than ever…
And yet we feel like it’s never enough.
This creates:
Chronic dissatisfaction
Constant comparison
A need to chase the next high
Whether it’s:
A purchase
Validation
Success
Distraction
We keep looking outside ourselves instead of connecting to what’s already here.
The Role of Shame in Human Suffering
Shame is one of the most powerful forces keeping people stuck.
Not just as an emotion, but as a conditioned voice.
A voice that says:
You’re not enough
You’re doing it wrong
You need to be different
But here’s the truth:
You don’t change through shame. You change through awareness.
When you remove shame, you create space to:
Understand your behaviors
Recognize your coping mechanisms
Choose something different
understand what is yours and what has been conditioned into you
Taking Responsibility for Your Inner World
We are not responsible for everything that happens in the world.
But we are responsible for how we:
Process it
Internalize it
Respond to it
And collectively, those choices shape the world we live in.
Your thoughts influence your feelings.
Your feelings influence your actions.
Your actions create your reality.
Service as a Path Out of Suffering
One of the most powerful ways to shift out of suffering is through service.
When you feel stuck in your mind, overwhelmed, or disconnected, ask yourself:
Who can I help today?
Service:
Brings you back into your body
Reconnects you to purpose
Reminds you of your value
Because your value is not something you earn.
You are valuable because you exist.
Reclaiming Your Power
We are more powerful than we’ve been taught to believe.
But systems thrive when we feel:
Insecure
Disempowered
Not enough
Because that keeps us consuming, comparing, and staying small.
But the world does not need more small, disconnected people.
It needs:
Conscious individuals
Self-aware leaders
People willing to take responsibility for their inner world
Two Truths Can Exist at Once
You may have been hurt.
And you are still responsible for your healing.
You may have experienced pain.
And you may still be carrying that pain through the stories you tell.
Both can be true.
Your Story Is Yours to Rewrite
If there is one thing I want you to take from this, it’s this:
Your soul is trying to lead you.
But the story you keep telling about yourself may be keeping you small.
And you get to change that.
You get to:
Rewrite your story
Reclaim your power
Choose how you see your life
Because suffering is optional.
And the story?
That’s yours to tell.
